Poetry Reading Performance -10th Anniversary Event
Rescheduled! New date: Sunday, July 17th, 11:45 am – 12:45pm (following the workshop with Swati Chanchani)
w/John Steele and Sawyer Ward
Come and help us celebrate Living Yoga’s 10th Anniversary featuring an evening of poetry, song, conversation, and chai with poet, John Whitney Steele, and singer, Sawyer Ward.
John Whitney Steele, a psychologist and Iyengar-Certified Yoga Teacher, will recite poems from his new book, Shiva’s Dance, while performing the poses associated with each poem.
John’s website: https://johnwhitneysteelepoet.com
“John Whitney Steele’s collection of poems about yoga invites the reader to go beyond the effort of asana and explore its significance for one’s own self. At times questioning, at others whimsical, the poems reflect on the form and substance of yoga practice as a means of union with the divine. They dip into the symbolism of mythological stories across boundaries, suggesting the universality of asana experience as a way inward.”
— Abhijata Iyengar, Senior Teacher, Ramamani Iyengar Memorial Institute, Pune, India
“These poems lead the reader into the imaginative energy at the heart of each pose, and through that energy, into the heart of yoga practice. They remind us that yoga is also about joy—in fact, it is about joy most of all.”
—Joseph Hutchison , Colorado Poet Laureate 2014-2019, author of Under Sleep’s New Moon
Sawyer Ward , an Iyengar-Certified Yoga Teacher and devotional singer will present songs related to some of the deities featured in the poems.
About Sawyer’s CD, Bija Mantra: “From the first note, Sawyer Ward takes you by the hand and leads you somewhere special. The opening notes on this first record feature Ward chanting the respective bija (seed) mantras of Hanuman, Shiva, Narayanaya, and Krishna… Her Om Namah Shivaya is beautiful and meditative and her final pairing of “Amazing Grace” with the Gayatri Mantra is heartfelt. Listeners who appreciate a soulful chant will surely approve of Ward’s delicate approach, which allows her voice and her devotional nature to shine.”
